YouTube Monetization Requirements 2027: What You Need and What's Changing
The YouTube Partner Program (YPP) bar is doubling for new applicants on February 1, 2027. Here's every requirement in one place: today's rules, the new ones, what existing partners must do, and the content policies that get most channels rejected.
The short version
| Until Jan 31, 2027 | New applicants from Feb 1, 2027 | |
|---|---|---|
| Subscribers | 1,000 | 1,000 |
| Long-form path | 4,000 public watch hours (last 12 months) | 8,000 qualified watch hours (last 365 days) |
| Shorts path | 10M qualified Shorts views (last 90 days) | 20M qualified Shorts views (last 90 days) |
| Early access tier (fan funding, Shopping) | 500 subs + 3,000 hours or 3M Shorts views | Unchanged |
You need the subscribers plus one of the two paths — not both.
Current requirements (until January 31, 2027)
- 1,000 subscribers, and either
- 4,000 valid public watch hours on long-form videos in the last 12 months, or
- 10 million valid public Shorts views in the last 90 days.
Watch time from the Shorts feed does not count toward watch hours. Private, unlisted and deleted videos, and ads, don't count either. The window is rolling: watch hours older than 12 months drop off every day.
What changes on February 1, 2027
YouTube announced the update on August 10, 2026. For creators applying on or after February 1, 2027:
- Watch-hours path: 1,000 subscribers + 8,000 qualified watch hours in the last 365 days.
- Shorts path: 1,000 subscribers + 20 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days.
- The early access tier for fan funding, Creator Partnerships and Shopping stays at 500 subscribers + 3,000 watch hours or 3M Shorts views.
If you're close to 4,000 hours now: apply as soon as you qualify. YouTube usually reviews applications in about a month. If you only reach the bar on or after February 1, 2027, the higher bar applies.
If you're already monetized
- Accept the updated terms in YouTube Studio by January 31, 2027 to keep earning. Fan-funding features (Commerce Product Module) have the same deadline.
- Stay active. From February 2027 a partner channel counts as active if it has any one of: 1,000 qualified watch hours in the past 365 days, 1 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days, or 2 long-form videos / 5 Shorts uploaded every 90 days. Channels that fall below get an extended 90-day window to catch up.
- Shorts revenue sharing requires 10M qualified Shorts views over the last 90 days. Missing it doesn't remove you from YPP or affect long-form earnings, and Shorts sharing resumes automatically when you're back above it.
- Separately, YouTube may turn off monetization for channels that haven't uploaded or posted in 6 months or more.
Account requirements
- Live in a country or region where YPP is available.
- No active Community Guidelines strikes.
- 2-Step Verification turned on for your Google Account.
- Access to advanced features in YouTube Studio (usually a phone verification).
- One active AdSense account linked to your channel (you can create one during the application).
The policies that decide approval
Reaching the numbers only puts your channel in the review queue. A reviewer then looks at your channel's main theme, most-viewed videos, newest videos, watch-time share and metadata (titles, thumbnails, descriptions). These are the policies that cause most rejections:
Inauthentic content
Renamed from "repetitious content" in July 2025. YouTube requires videos to be "materially varied" and to "deliver creative, educational, or other value". Not monetizable: mass-produced videos, the same template with tiny changes, automated slideshows, or content that feels generated at scale with little human input — with or without AI.
Reused content
Content built mainly on material you didn't create — clips, compilations, re-uploads, reactions with little commentary — isn't monetizable unless you add significant original commentary, education or editing. Having the owner's permission doesn't change this.
Advertiser-friendly guidelines
These decide whether each video earns full ads, limited ads or none. Common problems: profanity in the title or thumbnail, strong profanity at the start or throughout, graphic violence (in games too, especially early in the video), shocking imagery, and sensationalised coverage of tragedies. News and educational coverage of sensitive events can still be fully monetized.
Can an AI channel get monetized?
Yes, if it isn't mass-produced. AI voices, scripts and images are allowed as tools. What reviewers look for is real human value: your own research, opinion, structure, editing and variety between videos. Channels that publish several near-identical AI videos a day are the main target of the inauthentic content policy. Realistic synthetic content (people, events) must also be disclosed as altered or synthetic in YouTube Studio.
How to apply
- Open YouTube Studio → Earn.
- Accept the base terms, then set up or link an AdSense account.
- Wait for review — usually about a month, sometimes longer.
- If rejected: appeal within 21 days, or fix the problems and re-apply after 30 days (90 days after a second rejection).
Before applying, run your channel through the monetization checker and your newest videos through the pre-upload video review — reviewers look closely at your latest uploads.
